Marcon Fit-Out is putting the finishing touches to a major new state-of-the-art eye clinic in Belfast city centre.

Belfast’s Cathedral Eye Clinic is relocating to new premises on Academy Street in the city which represents an investment of over £2million. The opening of the new clinic this summer will bring pioneering new technology to Ireland for the first time and will create two new full time jobs.

Founded in 2008 by leading consultant ophthalmic surgeon, Professor Johnny Moore, Cathedral Eye Clinic has grown to become one of Ireland’s most respected and successful eye clinics, offering a wide range of services from simple eye tests to laser eye surgery and cataract removal.

Work on the ground-breaking clinic is now well underway and new third generation laser eye technology – the first of its kind in Ireland – is set to be installed. The Zeiss VisuMax ReLEx SMILE procedure is a key-hole style laser eye treatment, which is virtually pain-free and has a rapid recovery time. It is the newest, most accurate and safest laser eye treatment available.

The new Cathedral Eye Clinic will be a centre for excellence, providing bespoke eye treatments for patients across Ireland and the UK. The building will feature a ground floor clinic and consultation space; the first floor will house admin and research functions and the second floor includes two state-of-the-art operating theatres.

Marcon Fit-Out has been tasked with turning Professor Moore’s vision into reality. Mark O’Connor, Director, Marcon Fit-Out said: “We are delighted to be playing such a major role in the fit-out of the new Cathedral Eye Clinic in Belfast. The building is undergoing a complete transformation and when complete will be one of the leading eye clinics in the UK and Ireland.

The new treatment rooms will contain state-of-the-art equipment which will be installed by our team of specialists and our joinery workshop in Antrim has manufactured a range of bespoke items for the new premises that will add to the stylish finish of the clinic.”

Commenting on the announcement, Professor Moore, clinical director, Cathedral Eye Clinic said: “For over seven years, Cathedral Eye Clinic has offered pioneering treatments to patients across Ireland and the UK. We are investing £2million this state-of-the-art clinic, which will enable us to meet the increasing demand for bespoke eye care solutions.

“We are proud to invest in the new and improved Cathedral Eye Clinic and to bring Zeiss VisuMax SMILE procedure to Ireland for the first time, which will enable us to continue to uphold the highest level of safety in our laser procedures but now with virtually no pain for the patient.”

The new premises will expand on Cathedral Eye Clinic’s commitment to research, with the establishment of a dedicated teaching and training academy, which will be home to a number of funded PHD students, conducting research to further developments in ophthalmology.
