A new exhibition telling the story of the Plantation has opened to the public at the Guildhall in Derry~Londonderry.

Working in partnership with Tandem Design, Marcon has created a spectacular exhibition at the iconic building which is the only surviving guildhall still in civic use in Ireland.

Martin McErlean, Contracts Manager, Marcon, says: “This was an exciting and challenging project that we feel very privileged to have been involved with. The Guildhall is an architecturally stunning building with stained glass windows and wood panel features that we didn’t want to disturb or cover up with the new exhibition. The design created by Tandem has really enhanced these features without allowing them to overtake the importance of the exhibition.”

“We utilised our in-house specialist joinery workshop to manufacture all the required elements of the exhibition which uses a combination of artefacts and the latest audio visual technology to communicate all sides of the Plantation story.”

The displays for the artefacts have a number of variables, including humidity and temperature controls, specialist lighting and alarms, all of which had to be incorporated into our display units and cleverly hidden. Martin continues: “There are also a number of features within the exhibition, including a mini debating chamber which was unusually shaped, that required precision and finesse. Delivering a project of this nature is what our experienced team thrive on and we take great pride in seeing the whole thing come together.”

Marcon was responsible for the fit-out of the new Plantation Exhibition, liaising with the client’s interior design and architectural teams to guarantee a professional service, resulting in a fit-out of exceptional quality and finish. Martin concludes: “We worked very closely with Tandem and Derry City Council at every stage of the project to ensure all parties were happy with the progress and quality of work being supplied. We are delighted that we have allowed the Guildhall to retain its historical features whilst allowing visitors to enjoy a modern tourist experience.”
